The Key Stages of Risk Maturity

Definitions:

Vulnerable – Lack of awareness of the connection between proactive risk management and the achievement of organisational objectives.

Exposed – Aware of the connection between proactive risk management and achievement of objectives, however, little has been done to establish an environment for staff to understand how to improve the management of risk across the organisation.

Adaptive – The organisation is well aware of the connection between proactive risk management and the achievement of organisational objectives and either the risk framework has not yet been appropriately configured or staff have not been adequately trained and resourced to deliver more effective management of risk.

Resilient – An effective risk framework has been implemented that is facilitating the proactive management of risk in an integrated fashion.  Additional scope for improvement is likely to come from opportunities for additional engagement with senior management, increased risk management resources to support cultural change or through training and skills development of staff.

Agile – An effective risk framework is in place to manage risk in each of the five key building blocks of an organisation and to accelerate decision making to target opportunities within the organisation’s appetite for risk.
