Strat gaps – strategic capability gaps. Every organisation has them. Some people hire to fill the gaps. Others invest plenty in technical competence development or on leadership development.
How much have you invested in helping to improve the judgement of each of your team? I’m sure you coach them, encourage them and provide them with thinking aids, including the latest aid – AI. But none of that replaces what we perceive as mostly an innate skill or one that can only be derived through experience.
While some people are naturally gifted with critical thinking and decision-making skills (see this article on the neuroscience of gifted individuals), many are left to develop those skills through the school of hard knocks. Making misjudgements that cost you and them. Sometimes dearly.
However, becoming a better strategic leader doesn’t have to take years. Your people can quickly grow more confident with financials, workforce decisions and asset strategies, while gaining understanding of how their choices connect to profit and balance‑sheet outcomes or to impact and sustainability outcomes in government and NFP settings.
Next week I’ll reveal how you can quickly improve these skills within a safe, risk-free environment. In the meantime, consider the strat gaps you can see when you purvey your teams and their teams. How big are they? How have you been able to close those gaps in the past? How fast? My bet is you know the opportunities that can be seized when those gaps are closed faster.
